Ingredients

  • yellow fin tuna – 500g, cut into large chunks
  • sun dried Goraka (Garcinia cambogia) – 20 g  (soaked in water for 15 minutes)
  • Black pepper powder – 25 g 
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Salt – 1 tsp (adjust to taste)
  • Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
  • Garlic – 3-4 cloves, 
  • Ginger – 1-inch piece 
  • Cinnamon stick – 1 small piece
  • onion – 20 g 
  • ⁠  ⁠green chili – 2 pcs

Fish Ambul Thiyal (Sri Lankan Sour Fish Curry)

A Flavorful Sri Lankan Delight

Fish Ambul Thiyal (Sri Lankan Sour Fish Curry) is a traditional dish known for its tangy flavor and use of goraka (dried garcinia cambogia).

Instructions

  1. Prepare the goraka paste:
  • Drain the soaked goraka and grind it into a smooth paste using a mortar and pestle or blender. Add a little water if needed. Then grind well all other ingredients- curry leaves, garlic, cinnamon, ginger and onion and green chili 
  1. Marinate the fish:
  • In a bowl, mix the fish chunks with goraka paste, black pepper, tumeric, ginger garlic and chilli paste and salt. Let it marinate for 20-30 minutes.
  1. Cook the curry:
  • Heat a clay pot or heavy-bottomed pan and lay banana leaf on the bottom and arrange fish in the pot then cover it with banana leaf and close it with lid. 
  1. then use slow fire and Simmer the fish: if you use wood fire turn off the fire and simmer on charcoal.
  • Simmer on low heat for 20-30 minutes  or if it on wood fire let it cook untill 90 minutes until the fish is cooked and the gravy thickens. Avoid stirring too much to prevent breaking the fish.
  1. Adjust the seasoning:
  • Taste and adjust salt or sourness as needed. For a stronger tang, add a little more goraka paste.

Tips

Hint – if you can find fresh cinnamon leaves it’s much better than bananas leaves
